THE PROGRAM

Valley Art Institute has several on-going programs which are designed to serve the serious young art student as well as students who wish to enhance their understanding of the visual arts for their own pleasure.

College Preparatory Program

The primary focus of all our college preparatory classes is in Fine Art, as the curriculum covers all the major technical training required for successful portfolio submission. Students successfully completing our foundational curriculum will possess all the skills necessary for admission to a higher level of study, and will be better prepared for the difficulties most first year art college students face.

Teaching is mainly studio based and is concerned with developing the students in terms of their own progress in drawing, analysis and creativity encompassing a broad spectrum of ideas and mediums. Specific projects encourage the student to work independently to produce a quality portfolio.

Most four year art colleges require a relatively extensive portfolio for successful admission to any art program. Valley Art Institute will assist students in this program to complete the necessary requirements. Students should have at least the following for a successful portfolio:

  • Still Life Drawings, from observation utilizing a variety of techniques for attaining true value and texture.
  • Portrait Drawings and Paintings including a representational self-portrait and an expressive self portrait.
  • Portrait sketches and drawings of a variety of human types.eg. Children, Adults, Elderly. Completed sketch books of Gesture life drawings at least 9x12. Animal sketches are also a good addition to the sketch book.
  • Two to five paintings in oil or acrylic at least 16x20 utilizing principles of color theory.
  • Perspective Drawings at least 16x20 of both interior and exterior settings. Long pose Live Model Life drawings in pencil and fully valued. Sectional drawings of human anatomy.

This curriculum is designed to provide the student with the knowledge needed to make an informed decision about future programs of study at the post-secondary level.

Adult program

Valley Art Institute offers classes for adults. Fine Art classes are offered at this level of study, including drawing, painting, and more. Adult students are always welcome to attend any of our college preparatory courses.

Workshops

Valley Art Institute has on-going uninstructed workshops for those artists who seek to improve or maintain their skills in figurative drawing, painting or sculpture. Call VAI for updated schedules.

VALLEY ART INSTITUTE SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM

For College Preparatory Students

This program is geared solely for students who plan to attend art college. If you are currently in high school and are planning to assemble a portfolio for submission to an art college, this is an extremely valuable program. All Valley Art Institute students have successfully been accepted to their first choice art colleges after participating in at least one summer intensive study program.

Students participate in all courses offered at the college preparatory level for the summer session as well as open studio time to assist in the completion of assignments. Successful completion of this program greatly enhances the student’s letter of recommendation to the art colleges to which they will be applying.

If you are interested in this program, please contact the Director, Gregory Mansi. Director approval is necessary to gain admission.
